Step back in time at Downtown St. Louis’ Start Bar. For the last two years, this adults-only arcade has brought all the features any 80s or 90s kid would adore to the local bar scene: pizza, tokens, slushies and games as far as the eye can see. We recently caught up with Meagan Huth, Start Bar’s Marketing Director, to find out what’s new at this Downtown hot spot.
With the two-year anniversary in sight, what has changed at Start Bar since launch?
Since Start Bar opened we have continually added new, fun food and drink options like our Fried Rice, Master Stack Pancakes, 64-oz. Group Drinks—and of course our tacos, which are featured for $2 on Tuesdays. Ladies Night is building a reputation of being a “go-to” spot for those Thirsty Thursday-goers with $3 Skyy Vodka specials paired with Skeeball front and center on the main floor.
A popular brunch option is now on the menu. Can you tell us about these over-the-top pancakes?
As of this summer, we’ve added pancakes to the menu during our weekend Brunch Block Party! Pancakes can be ordered individually or, for the truly adventurous brunch goer, we’ve got our eye-catching Master Stack that is stacked 10 high with cakes and comes with three toppings of your choice for just $10. Customers can customize their stack and enjoy it with bottomless mimosas every Saturday and Sunday until 3 p.m.
The food is great, but the obvious draw is the games. What are some crowd favorites?
For the customers who are coming for the games, the go-to days are definitely Sunday through Thursday, as the games are set on FreePlay. Skeeball is a crowd favorite during our Thursday night Ladies Night and DDR [Dance Dance Revolution] was just added to the floor based on customer requests.
One of our most notable game additions is the Killer Queen. Killer Queen is a unique, 10-player game on the main floor and we’re one of few places in the U.S. to join in on this group game play.
Our Game Lounges on the mezzanine are a highly sought after space stocked with N64, lounge seating and a mini fridge that can be stocked in advance by emailing email@example.com.
What’s planned for the next two years? Any changes locals can look out for soon?
A full patio upgrade is already in progress! Our two custom-built, concrete ping-pong tables are finished and ready for game play. Over the rest of the summer customers will be able to watch another Stephen Savage-vision [owner of Start Bar and Wheelhouse] come to fruition with covered custom booths and an outside bar.
