At Top Notch, Axe Throwing Is Team Building

Drop the bowling ball and step away from the escape room. The new trend in group activities, team building and date night? Axe throwing.

This trendy activity is hardly new, but the popular pastime is taking over cities and social media. Top Notch, an axe throwing venue near the Gateway Arch, is the only location of its kind in Downtown St. Louis and is a hit with people across all ages and interests. Country superstar Brett Eldredge even recently stopped at Top Notch to throw axes with his crew before his St. Louis concert.

For $35 per person, you can enjoy 90-minutes of throwing axes with your friends, family or coworkers. Each lane holds up to 12 people, and six are required for a private lane. At least one adult must be present and children under age 8 are not allowed to participate.

While the main goal of amateur axe throwers is to have fun, there is a simple scoring system with the blue dots and bullseyes earning players the most points. Hoping for a little liquid courage before your turn? Top Notch is a beer- and wine-friendly BYOB location—but little should be the key word when drinking here, for obvious reasons. Safety is key at this unique venue.

To create a safe experience, axe-throwing sessions at Downtown’s Top Notch start with a briefing from an Axe Master. This 10- to 15-minute lesson covers safety and skill tips to help you land that kill shot (the blue dots) sooner. Closed-toe shoes are required, and loose clothing is recommended.

Past guests laud the friendly staff and fun experience in its online reviews, and Top Notch promotes its communication-heavy activity as a perfect corporate outing for coworkers and organizations. Sessions can help seasoned throwers perfect their skills or novices enjoy a little stress-reducing destruction. Just remember not to bring your own axe and use the one provided for you at the venue. As Top Notch says on its website, “It’s not a good idea to walk around an urban environment with an axe. In the event of an apocalypse, we will share our axes to take care of zombies.”
